A New Door for TWB

2008.11.23

I built the original boat door, the first winter we had the boat. I had been working on the interior varnishing and on this particular weekend, it was cold and rainy. The fourth time I had to mess with the weather boards to go to Hubbert's Hardware, I put the varnishing project on hold until I had a proper door. Not having any tools to speak of and fewer skills, I put together a door of Red Oak as best I could. It served us well for 11 years, despite not being the best material to use on a boat door.

As the years have gone by and my skills have improved with my tool collection, the door was starting to get on my nerves. This year, I reached a saturation point and had to replace it. The new door is made of glass reinforced White Cedar and about 10 coats of Varnish. The new window is properly seated and the door won't get that black in the grain issue that red oak does.

While I was at it, I put a few coats on the dining table and the drink/binocular holder got 10 coats, too.
