Owner Gary Nackman: My family is the original owner of Hull#5 "Escape". We think she is hull # 5, but are not sure. Serial numbers were not part of the hull. #5 was written on the boom. It was the first Yr that Bristol sold the "Cruising 40". We bought her in 1972 at a time when Bristol was having significant financial problems.

My dad (Ron Nackman) is the owner and I'll be taking her over next year. Her current home port is Hempstead Harbor on the Long Island Sound. Our cruising ground has included from Nova Scotia (1981, 1983) to Bermuda (1982). Mostly, just New England. Sloop rig..

Unbelievably, she has her original standing rigging. Second Perkins 4-107 Full Keel version, U-shaped Dinette version.

I was 8 the summer we picked her up from Bristol. We would spend every summer cruising the cape. Notable events have included being out in Tropical Storm Amy (60-70 knots) off Rhode Island, running before a full gale in the gulf stream off of Bermuda, surfing down waves!.
