JOAN II

Ike Hits Houston 2008.09.12

After hurricane Ike a sad update on Joan II. Almost all Houston Yacht Club boats and also in other areas around Galveston Bay fared worse as you can see from picture two. Most ended damaged on the lawn of the club. Joan II's mooring was thorough and kept her largely in place. The surge of 12 ft and the 100mph gusts first from the North and then from the South-East were too much for most mooring posts. Joan II's long main anchor rode, secured about 80ft away and on the primary winches, held but apparently became stuck behind one of the few mooring poles that didn't break and as a result didn't have the scope required to move her over the breakwater into deeper water when the wind veered South.

Damage seems limited to scratches and water damage on the port side of the interior. We hope to be back on the water soon but shipyards are few and far between and there are thoussands of damaged yachts.

Picture 1 is Thursday Sept 11 after preparing, Pic 2 is after the hurricane, Pic 3 is to show that it can be worse.

Loads of other pictures and lessons learned though against these forces difficult to be sure how to apply,

Just managed to convince the previous owner to part with his Bristol 40.

Joan (my wife) and I are now the new owners of "Joan II" (formerly Fiddler and Prosit) built 1982 (#135) and currently moored in Houston Yacht Club, Texas. The day of the sea trial and survey (coldest day in memory of Houston).

The day of the sea trial and survey (coldest day in memory of Houston) and the last picture shows me at the wheel and John Kolius (yes of Americas Cup Fame and a fantastic broker and advisor) during the sea trial (yes this is Texas).
